Article Reflection 1 - Can Men and Women Be Friends?

The writer says that it is possible to have male-female friendships in the article "Can Men and Women Be Friends?" despite all the challenges such as defining the relationship, overcoming attraction, establishing equality, the public eye, and the meeting place. I agree with the writer because I definitely know that women and men can be not only friends but also close friends. Firstly, I have many male friends, but what is more important than that is I have many male close friends. As a woman, I can say that they are much closer to me than many female friends of mine. I can talk, listen, or do anything I want. They can do the same things, as well. Female-female friendship is awesome, but male-female friendship is priceless. They are like brothers to me. Secondly, it is not important what other people think about it. We are very close friends, and that is important. Some people can believe that it is not possible to be just friends, but we show them that it is. Thirdly, we do not have such problems like thinking of what we are, friends or lovers because we know each other. If there was an attraction between us, we would never call each other brother or sister, which highlights the invisible boundaries. Thinking that becoming friends with the opposite sex is impossible dates back to the old times, the times that women were just there to have kids and pick up after their husband. However, we do not live in those days now. Women joined the work life. They have their roles in the social life, which makes it a necessity to meet opposite sex. To conclude, we need to cut across our boundaries and accept how amazing it is to have a cross-sex friend. We need to know its value.

I want to introduce you a recently released movie, The Great Gatsby. It was such an incredible movie that I could not get over the movie for a while. It was originally a book. Afterwards, some people decided to turn it into a film, which needs a great appreciation because they managed to overcome successfuly. Let me give you a brief information about the plot. The novel was written by an American writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald, in 1920s , so the plot takes place in 1920s as well. That time period is know as 'the Crazy 1920s' in the USA. Economy of the USA was trying to recover itself in those days after the war. The novel was written against the idea of 'the American Dream.' Let's have a look at the characters. Jat Gatsby is my favourite. Actually, I guess he is the favourite of everyone who watches the movie. Gatsby is performed by Leonardo DiCaprio, the actor who deserves to get an Oscar award most. Daisy Buchanan is performed by Carey Mulligan. Gatsby and Daisy were ex-lovers. However, life seperated their ways and Daisy got married to someone else, Tom Buchanan. I do not want to spoil your enthusiasm by giving too much information about the movie, but you should know the main events. We are experiencing all the events from the eyes of Nick, Nicholas Carraway. He is the first-person narrator. He is Gatsby's neighbor and Daisy's cousin. Hence, he is the one who is going to make the ex-lover meet again. However, the time is bad and the things that Gatsby is trying to get through are so harsh that no one could possibly survive. What can he do? He is trying to do his best to hold on life and his love. Actually, he does his best.

Leonardo DiCaprio did a great job again. He is really a successful actor and he deserves to be appreciated. When I watched the movie, I had an image of 'That Smile.' 

 

In the movie, every detail has an importance. They are not just there. They all are there because of some reasons. They all mean something.

A Beneficial Machine

Television became such an indispensible part of our lives that we cannot give up on it these days. There is a discussion about its being good or dangerous for us all around the world. I believe that television is advantageous in terms of the beneficial programs it offers.

Television offers us a chance to discover the whole world. For example, there are many documentaries one television. We can think as if we went to everywhere and saw all the things in the world thanks to them. In addition, we can learn the things that we have not even heard of before such as Aborigines or Amazon Rainforest.

In addition, television is educatory for children because it has many cartoon and programs for them. They increase the creativity of children and make kids learn faster. For example, when my little cousin, who is two and a half years old now, started to talk, she knew what to say when she wants something and how to act when she is happy, sad, or cross with us because of the cartoon called Pepee. We know it is because of Pepee, because she loves that cartoon and watches it all the time and also she behaves like Pepee. Thanks to that cartoon, she already knew counting, colors, and the names of some objects that we are surprised that she knew when she started to talk for the first time.

There are some people who think television is a waste of time. However, time is flying away whatever we do. Spending time by watching the beneficial programs such as documentaries and making our children watch them is a useful way, at least. Hence, whether spending time in a better way or wasting it depends on us.

Television has many benefits for the people who know how to use it. They can take advantage from it by watching the documentaries and educational programs. Although there are some dissenters, it is not enough to consider television as dangerous. It depends on people who will deal with it.

My Sister's Keeper

I am not a type of person who likes to cry. That is why I do not prefer the movies which contains too much sensuality. However, in the summer of 2009, I went to the cinema to watch the movie, My Sister's Keeper, with the insistence of my cousin. I refused firstly, but she convinced my in the end. I am so glad that she did. The movie was such an impressive one that I admired it. I loved the movie so much that I have watched it again recently. In the movie, there is a girl who is leukemia patient, Kate. Her mother, Sara, devotes her life to save Kate. She gives up everything; her job, her marriage, her husband, and her own life. While she is taking care of Kate, she unintentionally ignores his son, Jesse. Jesse is a dyslexic boy. He cannot read at all. However, his parent have no time to pay attention to him. That is why they send him to a boarding school that takes care of dyslexic children. He does not want to go and cries a lot. He gives his word to study more and be successful in the school just not to be sent. Sara and her husband, Brian, thinks of every possibility to keep Kate alive. Neither Sara's nor Brian's DNA doesn't match with Kate's. Then, their doctor makes a suggestion which is actually not legal. He suggests to create a baby, a donor born baby, who matches with Kate in terms of everything. Sara, of course, leaps at the chance to save Kate. Then, they have their third kid, Anna, who gives everything Kate needs. At the age of 11, she thinks that she has a life and she wants to decide to do whatever wants to. She hires a lawyer to sue her parents for the rights to her own body. She does not want to give some parts of her body to Kate anymore, which will certainly kill Kate. That is where the story starts. After she told this to her parents, some bad events occurs in their family relationships. Some of them get mad at Anna while others understand her. While they are quarreling with each other, Kate's situation gets worse. Since Sara dedicates her life to keep Kate alive, she does not aware of how tired her daughter is because of the curing process. Although Kate is tired of fighting against the cancer and wants to give up, her mother cannot see it just because she cannot stand the idea of losing her daughter.

I chose this video because this is the official trailer of the movie. In this video, you can see the things I've just mentioned up there. At first, they are very happy because everything is okay. Everything is just how it should be. However, when Anna demands her body's rights, everything just breaks off. Brian and Sara have an argument  Jesse, the brother of the girls, gets angry to Anna because she is not telling the truth according to him. In addition, you see a boy who is also sick, Taylor. Taylor and Kate have grown close. He does Kate good. They stand by each other in the process of chemotherapy. Kate's illness gets better thanks to Taylor. I  strongly recommend you to watch this movie. You may not be interested in drama movies like me, but even I was affected by it. Thus, just give it a chance and enjoy it. :)

Revised Version - An Ideal University

A university should have some features. I mean that there are a lot of universities in Turkey, or in the world, but few of them can offer you the opportunities that a university should do. For example, the instructors should be followers of the recent developments. They shouldn't be behind the times as a university teacher. Also, there is a feature that is not about the ideal university, but I think this is a must. I think the university students must be conscious. They must be aware of the things that are happening around them. That's one of the important characteristics that a university student must have. Metu is the ideal university for me because I can find the things that I'm looking for. I think there are a lot of things that a university should have, but how the students think and how their mind works are the most important ones. I love being here. Thanks to all the features Metu has.

Revised Version - Being A Student At METU

I'm very happy to be here. We have the opportunities Metu offers us. It is not limited only academic opportunities. For example, I love fencing. And I can learn it here. I don't know any other universities that has a fencing club. This is a very small example of our possible chances at Metu.

Apart from this, Metu is a widely known university. Everybody knows that it is hard to study here which makes me nervous because I don't like studying hard, and I don't know how to do actually. However, I'll probably learn, or I'm going to be here forever, which means that I have to learn it. :)
Oh, there is one thing I'm not that content with. The bunks. The bunks in the dormitories. They are too old to be used. I'm so uncomfortable that I cannot sleep properly. However, in this subject, there's nothing I can do except for waiting.
That's all for now. I love Metu whether it is hard to study, or not. I love Metu whether the bunks are too old, or not. It is good to be here. Also, I think it is a privilege to be here.

Journal Entry 5

IN TIME

I want to introduce you the movie I recently watched, 'In Time.' I was waiting for it to come out impatiently, but I could not have time to go to the cinema when it came out. Anyway, I have watched it lastly and I loved it. I had learned its plot long before it came out. Let me mention the plot. It is quite interesting. The movie takes place in the future. In that future, people no longer use money. They have something much better than it. They use 'time.' Time is everything. Time is your money when you went to a restaurant, a hospital,  a market,  a bakery. In addition, you earn time when working. Shortly, time is everything you need. Moreover, it is your life time, as well. You buy and sell via your time, and also you live with it. When your time runs out, you die. There is a counter on everybody's arms. Every people grow up until they are 25. After 25, their counter starts to count down and if it reaches 0, it means that you are dead. Poor people dies in the streets. However, rich people live forever! They have billions of time. Imagine a world like that! It sounds both amazing and cruel to me. It is a very creative plot. However, I think the movie needs to be improved because such a beautiful plot must be shot better. The movie is not unsuccessful but the subject is so attractive and interesting that no matter what Andrew Niccol (the director of the movie) does, I think I would find it insufficient. The plot itself is written by him, as well. So, it is not his fault but that plot should be treated better, however hard it is. Anyway, I still recommend you all to watch it if you have not yet. It is worth watching at least thanks to the plot. In addition to those, Justin Timberlake as Will Salas is one of the leading actors, if there is a fan of him among any of you. Amanda Seyfried as Sylvia Weis accompanies to Timberlake with all her beauty.  Enjoy the movie. :)

VIDEO REFLECTION

I chose this video because it is the official trailer of the movie. It simply shows what you need to see. The reason why you see the guns in the trailer is that there is a misunderstanding. People who thinks Will as a time thief are the Time Keepers. Time Keepers are responsible for preventing time thieving and punishing if it happens. However, as I said before, they misunderstood the event. Will did not steal the time. It inherited to him. Until Time Keepers understand the truth, it will be too late for reversing the things which are already  happened and the secrets which are already come to light. Actually, Will says the truth, but they do not believe him. And that is where everything starts and gets complicated. You should see the whole movie. You really should. Enjoy it. :)
